Main Task- Pre-Production - Storyboard

Main Task - Research - Lighting

Three Point Lighting is a standard method used in visual media such as video, film, still photography and computer-generated imagery. The technique uses three lights - key light, fill light and back light.

Key light: main light, usually strongest and has the most influence on the scene. Is placed to one side of the camera/subject so that this side is well lit and the other side shows shadow.

Fill light: secondary light, placed on opposite side of key, used to fill the shadows created by the key light.

Back light: placed behind the subject and lights it from the rear. Used to provide definition and subtle highlights.

Lighting safety
  • never mount a light outside without someone there at all times
  • always switch off lights when not in use
  • always make sure the light is parallel with one of the legs
  • always use gloves
  • never look directly into the light
  • always warn people when you are going to switch it on
  • always work with the lights at low level and then raise them
  • always use the surge protector
  • never try and replace a bulb
  • remember to include the lights in the risk assessment

Main Task - Research - Lighting

What is lighting?
All video uses some sort of lighting, whether it be natural light (from the sun) or artifical lights. The goal of viedo lighting is to choose the best source(s) to achieve your goals first and foremost, you need enough light and you need to be able to identify the lighting sources.

Spill - extra source of light coming from the same one, through the barn doors

Top light - light that comes from the top

Sillouette used to create mystery

Gels - colours
Scrimm - gives a blurred effect
